Offset & DigitalWhat is the difference between offset and digital printing?
Offset printing, involves the mechanical process of transferring, or “offsetting,” images using plates and a series of rollers to apply layers of ink to a sheet of paper. Plates containing the printed image are created in separations specific to each ink color being used. For example, for a 4-color (CMYK) job, four plates are created, one for each color – Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black. As the paper passes through the series of plates and rollers, a layer of each specific ink color is applied to the paper resulting in a complete full-color image or text. Specific Pantone (SPOT or PMS) colors can be added to this process as needed.
With digital printing, ink is applied in a single pass directly onto the paper. Images are transferred directly to paper using lasers, positive and negative static charges and either dry toner or liquid suspended toner particles. No plates are needed.
Technology has lead to major improvements in both offset and digital printing. Computer-to-Plate (CTP) systems have made a huge impact on conventional offset printing, providing improved quality, efficiency and cost. Chemistry-free plating systems have also added environmental benefits, eliminating hazardous processing chemicals. Digital machines eliminate the plating process entirely providing faster, more precise output in short periods of time. Here are some advantages of both:
Advantages of Offset
- Lower cost per unit for larger quantities (Cost goes down the more you print)
- Consistent high image quality
- More paper options
- Specialty colors and techniques including Pantone, metallic ink and varnishes for added texture
- Larger format
Advantages of Digital
- Lower cost per unit for small quantity (1000 or less)
- Fast turn-around times (no drying time required, less setup)
- Variable data printing (Each page can be unique)
- Instant Proofing (Every print is an exact proof)
- Less waste
